John Swift was introduced to off-road racing at an early age by his father, Ray, who has raced in Baja since the late 1960’s (and still races when he has time). The younger Swift grew-up dreaming of his first time behind the wheel of his own truck in Baja.

In 1984 John Swift fulfilled his dream, and by 1986 he had decided the Ford Ranger platform was the way to go. Those who’ve followed Swift’s off-road career remember that he was one of the first Ranger drivers to utilize Ford’s Electronic EEC-IV system in off-road racing, back in 1989. He grabbed both of the Baja wins that year, piloting his four-wheel-drive Ranger. Earning another Class 7/4X4 Baja 500 victory in 1991, he finished up second-in-class behind the Simon Brothers in the season’s points.

With the formation of the Rough Rider program in 1991, Swift had a V-6 powered Ford Explorer designed and built, by Bill Savage, for his team to campaign. At its inaugural race, the 1991 Parker 400, John placed the new BFGoodrich/Ford-sponsored truck in the winners circle, and began his unequivocal mastery of SCORE’s Class-6  ranks.

Following three successive Class-6 titles, and three seasons of technology development bred into his Ford V-6 powered Explorer; John has again changed the face of desert racing with an all-new, incredibly innovative Ford V-6-powered vehicle. The new Class-7 Unlimited Ford Ranger mirrors many of the same philosophies of the original Explorer —Building a reliable, durable and EXTREMELY FAST truck. This new truck, designed and built by Foutz Motorsports will utilize its horsepower-to-weight ratio to be quick, nimble, and just as capable as any full-blown Trophy Truck.
